Here are answers to frequently asked questions about SOLOS.

Q: Where are SOLOS meetings held?

A: Our meetings are held at the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health at 8310 Ewing Halsell Drive in San Antonio.  Click here for directions.

Q: When are the meetings?

A: We meet every first and third Wednesday evening of every month from 7:00 to 8:30.  We don't meet if the meeting date falls on a Federal holiday.

Q: How soon after the death can I start attending meetings?

A: Everyone's grief journey is different.  Some people attend their first meeting weeks after a suicide while others take years to seek support.  You're welcome to attend group anytime you feel up to attending.

Q: Do I have to talk about the suicide or my feelings during the meeting?

A: You are free to talk or not during a meeting.  Some people attend for several sessions before they feel comfortable discussing the death or their personal story.  Talk when you're ready to talk.

Q: How much does it cost to attend a SOLOS meeting?

A: It doesn't cost anything to attend a SOLOS meeting.  Any incidental costs of the organization are met through voluntary donations.

Q: Are there SOLOS resources available to me outside of the meetings?

A: SOLOS has a lending library with numerous books and articles that can be checked out by attendees.  We simply ask you return the materials so they can be used by other members.

Q: Who leads the group meetings?

A: The group facilitators are peer survivors like you who have completed facilitator training under the auspices of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  The facilitators are not trained mental health professionals but volunteers who have been affected by suicide and desire to help others in similar circumstances.

Q: How do I know that what I say in group will stay in group?

A: We can't guarantee that what you say in a SOLOS meeting will stay in the group.  We do have some ground rules and one of them states that we expect each member to respect the privacy of others and to keep what is said in the group within the group.

Q: Can I bring my children to group meetings?

A: SOLOS is tailored specifically for adult survivors and wouldn't be an appropriate venue for young children.  There are other agencies that specifically help children through the grief process and they're listed on the resources page.

Q: If I attend a meeting am I obligated to keep attending?

A: You are free to attend as many or as few meetings as you like.
